A Home Away From Home

The Hope Lodge in Salt Lake City will serve as a home away from home to the entire Intermountain West, including patients from rural Utah, as well as from surrounding states. The Hope Lodge will be designed to meet the particular needs of the cancer patient and caregiver. With  42 suites, the Lodge will serve nearly 800 patients annually.

This year, nearly 4,500 Utahns will have to travel to Salt Lake City to receive treatment. Tragically, some patients with cancer who have to commute to receive care decide to forgo treatment to avoid the financial devastation that can come with travel and associated expenses. Right now, most who travel to Salt Lake for treatment stay in hotels or motels.

The Hope lodge will change that.

THE HUMAN IMPACT

  • Cancer impacts more than just the patient; it affects the patent's entire family—emotionally and financially. The Hope Lodge provides support for family by providing a free, positive environment where the patient can focus on healing and both the patient and caregiver can have access to support and resources.

  • Studies have found that cancer support groups can decrease anxiety, reduce depression, enhance self-esteem and improve relationships with family members and friends. The Hope Lodge will serve as a support group as patients and caregivers alike share their experiences.
